Canelo Alvarez Opens Up About Facing Jake Paul Following Mike Tyson Defeat

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez informed reporters last week that he is contemplating accepting Jake Paul‘s challenge for a fight after observing Mike Tyson, one of the greatest boxers of all time, lose to the YouTube star-turned-fighter by unanimous decision.

“I must admit, I feel saddened by what I observed regarding Mike Tyson,” Canelo expressed to reporters, according to talksports.com. “Due to his age and other factors, he isn’t able to do those kinds of things.”

When asked if Tyson’s defeat spurred him to accept Paul’s challenge for a

“I [did] consider it when I witnessed the fight and observed that injustice,” Alvarez told the press. “However, we will find out.”

‘It’s Not Beneficial for Boxing’

During the March interview with TMZ, Alvarez rejected the Paul-Tyson fight as merely a spectacle and not a genuine boxing event.

“It’s not [beneficial for boxing],” Alvarez informed TMZ. “Netflix is great for boxing, but in that particular fight, I believe Netflix is making a mistake.”

“I believe having Netflix involved is beneficial, but not in that type of conflict.” I believe it’s more [of a] performance than a battle. “That’s my opinion.”

Although Alvarez was dismissive of the match, Paul’s clear win against Tyson attracted 60 million households and reached a peak of 65 million simultaneous streams, as announced by Netflix and Most Valuable Promotions.

It also exceeded $18 million in attendance revenue, doubling the prior Texas gate record in both boxing and MMA, surpassing Alvarez’s $9 million record.

Canelo Alvarez Eases Position on Battling Jake Paul

In contrast to earlier times, when Alvarez consistently refused to fight Paul while he remains at the top, he has eased his position.

In September 2023, the current WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight champion stated that he would only think about fighting Paul if one specific condition is met.

“When I finish boxing, why not?” Alvarez mentioned during the Full Send Podcast. “Perhaps, perhaps I’ll go for it.”

Alvarez clarified that it might still occur before he steps away from the sport.

“Sure [once I finish competing at the highest level],” Alvarez stated. “I believe it’s beneficial because some individuals have never seen boxing or lack knowledge about it, [and] they are interested in watching Jake Paul since he attracts fans from different backgrounds, correct? That’s beneficial since everyone [can] appreciate it. Perhaps [I’ll face Jake Paul someday]. “Perhaps.”

Jake Paul Constantly Challenged Canelo Alvarez

Paul has consistently confronted Alvarez before, with the latest instance occurring after he won by an eight-round unanimous decision on November 15.

“Canelo requires my presence, so I won’t even attempt to challenge him,” Paul stated during the post-fight discussion with MMA reporter Ariel Helwani. “He realizes he desires a payment.” Therefore, he is aware of the location of the money man.

Prior to defeating Tyson, Paul expressed his desire to compete against Alvarez in the cruiserweight category. Alvarez came in at 168 lbs. when he overcame Berlanga.

“Me against Canelo at 200 pounds for the cruiserweight title”
