Australia defeated India by 184 runs in an exciting finish to the fourth Test in Melbourne, gaining a 2-1 advantage in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
India was given a target of 340 runs in 92 overs and played carefully during the innings, showing minimal intention to pursue a win.
However, a remarkable bowling display in the evening session led Australia to claim the last seven wickets for only 34 runs, resulting in India being all out for 155 in the final hour.
Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal appeared resolute in securing a tough draw for India following a top-order collapse to 33-3, before he was caught behind off Pat Cummins for 84 runs from 208 balls with 21 overs left.
Jaiswal previously struggled through a wicketless afternoon session alongside wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who scored 30 off 104 balls – but they were the sole batters to reach double figures.
Pant’s exit post-tea triggered the downfall, as he lost his composure by hitting Travis Head to long-on for yet another unnecessary dismissal.
Cummins and Scott Boland ended with three wickets apiece, while spinner Nathan Lyon claimed two after his batting exploits, getting out for 41 in the second over of the day as Australia was dismissed for 234.
He was out bowled by Jasprit Bumrah, who concluded with 5-57 in yet another dazzling display.
The series ends in Sydney on 2 January, and a victory would guarantee Australia’s spot in the World Test Championship final.
