Katinka Hosszu, the Hungarian swimmer famous as the ‘Iron Lady’ for her stamina and adaptability, has declared her retirement from competitive swimming at the age of 35. The three-time Olympic gold medalist announced the news on her Instagram, reminiscing about an extraordinary career that lasted more than thirty years.
“For three decades, the water has been my refuge, a place where I discovered peace and resilience,” Hosszu stated. “From the instant I initially entered the pool as a kid, I realized I had found something enchanting.”
Hosszu’s journey is adorned with many achievements, featuring three Olympic gold medals from the 2016 Rio Games, where she excelled in the 200m and 400m individual medley as well as the 100m backstroke. She also won a silver medal in the 200m backstroke at those same Olympics. Her supremacy reached the World Championships, where she secured nine gold medals, particularly completing four straight IM doubles from 2013 to 2019.
In addition to her collection of medals, Hosszu established 20 world records throughout her career, with her 200m individual medley world record of 2:06.12, achieved in 2015, remaining unbroken. Her unyielding competition calendar and talent for succeeding in various events earned her the title ‘Iron Lady,’ reflecting her determination and dedication.
