Sources report that former Philadelphia Eagles standout wide receiver DeSean Jackson is close to finalizing a deal to serve as the next head coach of Delaware State University’s program. Jackson recently took part in an on-campus interview, and both sides are anticipated to conclude the agreement shortly. Jackson has long dreamed of coaching at a historically Black college or university (HBCU), and that aspiration now seems within reach.
Jackson, 38, ended his NFL career following the 2023 season, wrapping up an impressive 15 years in the league. He is most recognized for his time with the Philadelphia Eagles, during which he was honored with Pro Bowl selections three times and became the first player in NFL history to be selected for the Pro Bowl at two positions—wide receiver and kick returner. During his career, Jackson additionally played for the Los Angeles Rams, Washington, Tampa Bay, Baltimore, and Las Vegas.
During his 95 matches with the Eagles, Jackson stands third in the all-time list for receiving yards (6,512), sixth in receptions (379), and ninth in receiving touchdowns (35). As a punt returner, he ranks second in punt returns (132), third in punt return yards (1,296), and shares the team’s all-time record in punt return touchdowns with four.
Delaware State’s football team has encountered difficulties in recent years, concluding the 2024 season with a 1-11 record, resulting in the termination of coach Lee Hull. The Hornets have not had a successful season since 2012. Jackson’s hiring fits into a recent pattern of HBCUs recruiting ex-NFL players with minimal coaching backgrounds, similar to cases like Deion Sanders at Jackson State and Michael Vick at Norfolk State.
The potential hiring of Jackson is viewed as a pivotal step for Delaware State, intending to rejuvenate the program and motivate players by introducing a coach with vast professional playing background and a strong enthusiasm for mentoring at an HBCU.
