Will the Red Sox Add a Former Astros Star to Their Lineup?
The Boston Red Sox would certainly rank among the leading contenders in the American League if they can secure Alex Bregman this offseason.
The ex-Houston Astros All-Star is arguably the most successful free agent currently on the market and would provide Boston with the right-handed power hitter it urgently requires. Even though this is true, an agreement has not been reached despite the numerous rumors.
Boston would benefit from having Bregman, but acquiring him could be expensive, and it would raise defensive logistical issues afterward. The outcome is uncertain, but Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe proposed that the team should sign him only if they trade Masataka Yoshida and clear third base by shifting Rafael Devers to designated hitter.
“Bringing in Alex Bregman only makes sense if the Sox place him at third base, part ways with Masataka Yoshida, and designate Rafael Devers as the designated hitter,” Abraham stated. “(Craig Breslow) remarked that Devers is currently the third baseman ‘as it stands now.'”
This is a rather reasonable idea. There have been whispers that Bregman is seeking a contract that might reach $200 million. That does appear to be a significant amount of money to risk on Bregman experimenting with a new full-time role at second base while potentially hindering some of the best prospects from the minors.
If the Red Sox manage to acquire Bregman for third base, making the trade would be obvious. If Boston desires him for a different role, matters would become more complicated, yet it ought to still sign him.
